We just added some new functionality in the MailChimp signup form designer. Now, whenever you add a dropdown, you’ll see some new pre-defined options:
- Gender
- Days of the week
- Months of the year
- US states
- World countries
Here’s some back story if you’re not sure why this is kinda cool…
Previously, if you wanted a field for “Country” you’d have to use our “Address” button, but that also included other fields, like Street1, Street2, City, State, ZIP, etc. This didn’t work so great for people in countries who don’t use ZIP codes. Or have states. And in some cases, customers just wanted a lone “country” field.
You could always build a dropdown in MailChimp, then add all the countries yourself. But there are around 300 200 of them, so that would be a chore. This new feature lets you add a country dropdown with a single click, then you can add/remove individual countries if you want.
We hope it saves you some time! (ziggy)

Time saving, indeed!
However, in signing up for the MonkeyWrench using my newer personal email acct (as opposed to my work email), I noticed two things.

1. An unfair choice to those equally nerdy across all spectra…
2. A field-adding, click-happy form builder (Ben?), though further research may indicate a slightly *buggier* issue.
I’m lovin’ these new features, chimps. Keep it up!
1 and 2 are the result of me testing. Oopsie!
Who me?
Great addition.
Now we just need – there’s always more, right? – the ability to have a display value and a different DB value so it is much easier to use merge logic. E.g., if DE|US|CA|EN|FR|IE then… rather than Canada|United States|Republic of Ireland|France|etc. Or maybe just numeric? country[1]|country[5]|etc?
Am I correct in that with groups we actually can use only the numeric value of the option, like preferences[2] or something? I ask because my group options are each long lists of similar items so would be a nightmare to use them together for merge tag logic. Would go over your character limit, I recall.
Thanks, Ben!
Ben, would it be possible to add an option in the future to choose between the lists?
What I am thinking is to give users the option to choose between 3 languages. We use three different lists, because we send three different newsletters in three differnet languages…
I know it will not be that simple.
At the moment we use the signup form for each list in each language version on our web sites. But it happens that some users get a German version instead of the English one – just because they subscribed in to the “wrong one”.
dare I ask what the gender options are? This is an area where just male/female end up being pretty unfair for a sizable part of the population.
Male, Female, and “I’d Rather Not Say.”
Is it possible to take our current “State” field, which is a text field, and convert it to a dropdown with pre-filled state names? Only thing I could figure out was to hide our current “State” field and make a new “State” field with the pre-filled dropdown. Only problem is I now have two state fields to pull from when I segment my lists.
A pre-defined field with state names in a drop-down menu would be fabulous–if it worked. Right now I’m in a continuous loop where if I select “add a field” and “drop-down,” it cycles me back through the log-in process and then back to the list view, where there is a new text field added. Perhaps I will try this in another browser, in case it is a Safari issue?
You may want to clear your cache and cookies. At MailChimp, we develop the app using mostly Chrome, Safari, and Firefox. The only browser issues we ever see are with IE, and occasional little naggy things w/Chrome. Safari shouldn’t be an issue, so I’m guessing it’s a cache thing. Furthermore, we’ll sometimes update the code in our app, but then it takes time to propagate out through the Akamai system. Please don’t hesitate to contact our support team if you still have any issues here.
Is there any way to make United Kingdom come up as default? Even after typing in United Kingdom as the predefined value, it still comes up with USA as preselected.
I’m sure MailChimp’s customers are mostly in the USA, but 80% of my website visitors are from the UK.
Hey, Kelly. You actually can set the default country on address fields in the form builder. Look in the field settings. Here’s a screenshot: https://skitch.com/aarronwalter/rupad/form-and-email-designer-mailchimp
