We recently introduced a new RSS-to-email merge tag: RSSITEM:SHARE
Using this tag allows your subscribers to share individual articles in your RSS feed, as opposed to sharing the entire email newsletter. So if your code looks like this:
your final emails will look like *this:
* um, without the ginormous red arrows.
It’s a nice, easy way to make sharing specific articles in your emails easier.
Previously, the only option was to share the entire email.
Note that if you just use our
RSSITEM:SHARE
tag all by itself, we’ll include a bunch of social network icons.
If you prefer to limit the choices to, say, three networks (like in my screenshot), you can do this:
RSSITEM:SHARE:Facebook, Twitter, Digg
And here’s the list of options:
- BlinkList
- Delicious
- Design Float
- Digg
- DZone
- MisterWong
- Mixx
- MySpace
- Netvouz
- NewsVine
- Propeller
- Slashdot
- StumbleUpon
- Technorati
- Webnews.de
- YahooMyWeb
If you’re going to be tweaking merge tags and RSS campaign templates, here are some other features you might want to try:
- Twitter template and merge tags let you pull recent tweets, profile info into your email sidebars. Merge tags on this cheatsheet
- Turning twitter faves into RSS-emails
- Official MailChimp Merge Tag Guidebook

This is a great addition Ben. Thank you! Curious, is there any way (or will there be) to simply provide a URL to tie to the share feature? For many of our newsletters, we’re manually putting together the email newsletter (e.g. not via RSS) but would love to share a destination URL that goes with the newsletter (rather than the Mailchimp archive page)… maybe a simple modification of the above could accomplish this?
Good questions Michael. I was able to make the Share tag work for “regular” emails by removing the RSSITEMS part of it.
So in the footer of my template, I have the following:
*|SHARE:Facebook, Twitter, Digg, Delicious|*
Here’s a screenshot of how it looked when I sent a test of the template to myself. And all the links worked just fine. Wicked cool!

The RSS feed support continues to get better and better. Awesome addition!
