Our API Team has been busy lately.
Right after posting new functionality to our API (the ability to pass content from your CMS to MailChimp for delivery), they went and created a nifty MailChimp WordPress plugin.
So if you’ve got a WordPress blog or website, and you’d like visitors to subscribe to your email newsletter (not everybody likes RSS), this is a convenient way to stick your MailChimp signup box right into your side column (we’re using it on this blog).
Installation is a snap. Once you’ve got it dropped into your WordPress directory and activated, you can configure everything from WordPress, right in your browser (what form fields to display, text, interest groups, and even the design). No coding necessary!
What about a Drupal plugin?
Hi folks, we’re going to close comments for this post to make sure that everyone gets the support they need. If you’re having trouble with the plugin or just have general support related questions about it, you’ll want to head over to http://wordpress.org/tags/mailchimp?forum_id=10 for assistance.
@ Ivan – Is this what you need? http://drupal.org/project/mailchimp
Excellent news.
Looking forward to giving this a try.
Looking forward to trying out this plugin, should come in handy for an upcoming project. Thanks!
Any news as to when this will be updated to work with WP 2.7?
Thanks for the continued innovation -
Bob
Bob – I just pulled out WP 2.7, installed the plugin, and subscribed my email using it without any issue.
If you’d like to contact me via email with some details about the issue you are running into, I’ll be happy to help. api _at_ mailchimp -dot- com
I have set this up in WordPress (very cool by the way), but I have one question, my interest category in my list is a radio buttons. But in the WordPress plugin, it is displayed as the radio click on one line, and the text on the next… It seems like it should be on the same line, but for some reason it is on two. Is there a way to fix this? You can see it on my family blog at http://www.luvfam.com.
Thanks
Awesome plugin! I have it up and running just fine. I have one requested tweak to make, I would like to add and additional comment under the subscribe button/Update ME! button on my site (www.rmlmetals.com) to test different reasurance clauses of not soliciting their email addresses. I have a decent programming/HTML background and mess around just fine with the php coding. I am sure the source file to mess with is the “mailchimp_includes.php” file, and the part I think I need to add the text is just after line 150 after the “mc_signup_submit” or am I mistaken? I am just hoping for a little help with coding to add to display the text after/under the submit button. Any help much appreciated.
@Brad – we finally fixed up the interest group display issues in a release pushed out today.
@Michael – yes, thats where you would add that. Just keep in mind that if you auto-upgrade to a newer version of the plugin, that change will get wiped out.
Thank you Jesse, I appreciate you taking the time to get back to me. I am trying to fresh’en up my PHP by reading some more, I just updated your plugin and will experiment with different text inserts at the end. It would be cool, if yall could add that functionality to the WYSIWYG editor plugin for wordpress or on your site to add it in that way instead of manually. Just a little suggestion.
How do I get an IMAGE into the sign-up box within the WordPress plug-in. BE VERY specific – teehee. Like baby steps, puhleez….
THANKS!
kathy
THANK YOU…I figured it out in the wee hours. I am very pleased. Now, if I could figure out how to get an image to float behind the part where the name and email address goes, i would dislocate my shoulder patting myself on the back….
THANKS AGAIN!!!
kathy
Kathy,
Struggling for last 6-7 hours.
How did you manage to add an image to the mailchimp signup box?
Seems like the harder than climbing mount everest! Any help is appreciated.
here is my code line
div.mc_signup_form { echo “background-image: “http://sanjosegreenhome.com/wp-content/themes/grassland/images/rss.png;”};
totally awesome!
Kathy, I love that idea and pic. I just might have to borrow that idea and use it on my site.
Cute puppy pic.
Has anyone gotten the MailChimp WordPress plug-in to work under Windows (IIS7, PHP5) enironment?
When I try to activate the mailchimp plug-in my WordPress stops with an Internal Server Error…
Most of the other plug-ins works fine in my system (IIS7 running PHP) but maybe not MailChimp?
Any suggestions?
I haven’t installed it yet, but I’m curious as to whether an “unsubscribe” button is offered as well in the plugin. Any insights?
@Kate – No unsub button. Will pass your idea on to the nerds.
@Ben:
Thanks!
Is the WP plug-in still available? All the links I click lead me to no where. Help…
@LaDonna the WP plugin (and all others) is linked from here: http://blog.mailchimp.com/plugins/
The WP page has a blue download button that takes you to:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/mailchimp/
I just tested, and it worked for me.
I’ve installed the WordPress plugin in a text widget. I’ve turned off the custom styling in the settings of MailChimp Setup. I’ve saved the changes and cleared my temp files yet I still have a border around the contents of the form. How do I do away with the border? This is in Firefox 3. Even worse in IE 8 the text widget with the form doesn’t show at all. It should be the top widget of the right sidebar.
Also when a selection is made in the interests groups an error is returned saying “» “on” is not a valid Interest Group for the list: ahhmoments Newsletter”
Can you please tell me how I can fix these issues?
Sue – to get the border turned off, turn the Custom Styling back on and set both the “header” and “form” border settings to “0″.
The interest groups problem looks to be because you have the “show” checkbox turned on, but there are no actual interest groups for that list. Just switch that off and you should be fine. That’s just an edge case bug we’ll need to fix.
Great plugin. Is there a way I can adjust the width of the plugin. I updated my WordPress to the latest version today and that is when the problem occurred. I have taken the widget off my sidebar and then put it back in hoping that would help. Any suggestions? Do I need to download a newer version of the plugin?
Thx
Brad
Hi.
I am new customizing a widget/theme but am learning a little at a time.
I would like to ask how hard it would be to add an image and edit the font of the current Mail Chimp widget I am using so it matches the look of the other widgets in my sidebar.
Thank you for your help.
Leslie
Leslie -
If you turn off the custom styling, you can target the #mc_signup_form css id in a style sheet to customize things. Then you can either add you image header that way or you should be able to put an img tag in the Header field
I Give Up
- I simply want to add a FREE eBook offer to this sidebar widget. it will enhance sign up rate i know. But i can’t do it.
I am not good at php html, the present form on my site looks a mess on IE.
Help me
can i add e book offer with this sidebar widget
You’ll likely be tracking the Ebook offering with either an Interest Group or a merge field – if so, just add those fields in the config settings for the plugin. One note – the WP plugin doesn’t currently handle the field types other than text fields, so if you are using, say, a radio button field for that, you’ll probably want to get the Embed Code form for your list and paste it into your WP sidebar template.
Hi,
installed the Plugin on WP 2.8.4
As soon as I click activate, WP freezes.
I can only get WP to run again if I delete the Mailchimp Plugin Directory.
I am hosting my own WP Installation on a 1&1 Server. Any ideas how to fix this?
thx
boris
Sounds like our plugin is conflicting with another one you have installed. If you can check your web server error logs, there should be some sort of error message there that may help us prevent this.
Conversely, a list of plugins activated for your site may help, though that will likely take us longer to test.
Jesse,
thank you for the helpful hint. I went through my plug-ins and turned them off one by one.
Looks like the Askimet Comment Spam Checker caused the problem.
Also I had to turn off fance JS to make it work without crashing.
Have you heard of problems with Askimet before?
thanks again for your help!
Actually I heard about an Akismet conflict yesterday for the first time. The version released yesterday seemed to clear that up, though I’m still not 100% sure why it just started. If you install that, you should be able to turn both plugins back on plus the javascript option in ours.
Can we have a POP UP op-in Sign up form in form of a WordPress plugin.
Im wodering how you customize the length and colour of the text input boxes on the sign up form, and how you customize the submit button, instead of the default one. thanks
@Todd – If you’re using the code we provide, the customization is limited. There’s an option on all our signup forms to “switch to advanced” mode. That allows you to do anything you want, so long as you know HTML.
great ta for the quick reply, i have fundamental knowledge so cool ill get in and give it a go.
Is there .css files included in the plug in folder?
Todd – there’s no CSS file in there – we generate a style tag when you use the styling options available via the plugin settings. Take a look at the HTML for it and you’ll find the elements are easily targetable with your own css, though.
Ben,
I am struggling for last 6-7 hours with just one line of code in the mailchimp.php file
How do you add an image to the mailchimp signup box?
here is my code line
div.mc_signup_form { echo “background-image: “http://sanjosegreenhome.com/wp-content/themes/grassland/images/rss.png;”};
If you’re going to edit the plugin code, you are pretty much on your own. However, you should be able to easily add the normal CSS version of that tag to your site’s style sheet and be set.
I have installed the plugin in 2.8.4 and everything works fine except when I try to customize text using Japanese :
- Submit Button text : everything on front is garble (like ãã£ã³ã), but the Japanese in MC plugin admin page is still showing properly…
- Header content, FO displays Japanese just fine, but the Japanese in MC plugin admin page is garble like : ãã£ã³ãã¼ã³ã¹ã¿ã¼ã
I have tried to modify error messages in php files, I have the same problem on FO, cannot display properly.
Anyone can help ?
Can I use Mailchimp to send emails that people sign up for using the Subscription Options Plugin? Do you have a pdf or faq I can read about this?
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/subscription-options/
I’ve found a bug with AJAX submission on IE6 using version 1.1.8 of the plugin.
Steps to replicate:
1. Complete the sign up process. The form fields are cleared and the success message is displayed.
2. Sign up again in the same form using a new email address, regardless if the fields are valid or not.
At this point, the entire form is displayed within #mc_message instead of just the error or success messages. One form is nested within the other and no longer submits correctly.
This problem is caused by the following block of code located at line 22-27 of ‘mailchimp/mailchimp.js’:
var reg = new RegExp(“class=’mc_success_msg’”, ‘i’);
if (reg.test(data)){
mce_jQuery(‘#mc_signup_form’).each(function(){
this.reset();
});
}
This resets all of the form field values to their original state when the sign up process is successful. In IE6 this also resets the value of hidden input field “mc_submit_type”, changing it back to “html” instead of “js”. As a result, the mailchimpSF_display_widget() function will return the entire form instead of just the error or success messages when the sign up form is submitted again.
To fix this I updated the above block with the following change:
var reg = new RegExp(“class=’mc_success_msg’”, ‘i’);
if (reg.test(data)){
mce_jQuery(‘#mc_signup_form’).each(function(){
this.reset();
});
mce_jQuery(‘#mc_submit_type’).val(‘js’);
}
This will change the value of mc_submit_type back to “js” so it works again in IE6.
Awesome, thanks. One of our guys is working on it now.
Would you be interested in this prize for helping us debug mailchimp?

That would be awesome!
I want to increase the length of the input text box, what’s the css style and variable I should be targeting?
Thanks

It would be nice to redirect user to my own thank you page once someone subscribes. I use wordpress so, what should i tweak to do that?
UMX, you can point people to your own thank you page with this feature:
http://blog.mailchimp.com/custom-redirect-urls-for-subscribe-form/
But IIRC, if you’re using the wordpress plugin, it displays confirmations and errors w/out leaving your blog at all.
Yes Ben i use wp plugin and i tried this feature but it does not redirect to the page i specified in form settings. Instead it just adds #mc_signup_form prefix to my domain and sends confirmation email. Maybe there is way to change manually mailchimp_includes or better to use raw code without plugin?
Umx, I have the same issue you describe here. I wonder if you fixed this. If you did, can you share your resolution
Thanks
i”m using the widget on my site in the sidebar at mba365.com. i need to change the width to fit in the sidebar. Can anyone help?
Hi,
I’m using WordPress 2.9.2 and have the following plugins installed.
Google Analyticator
Google XML Sitemaps
TweetMeme
MailChimp.
MailChimp installed fine and i’ve configured all the settings however when i go to the widget page its only partially loaded, the drag and drop functionality is not working and the right hand widget bar is missing. When i deactivate the MailChimp Plugin everything works again.
Have you seen this before? Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks
For some reason, I cannot get the MailChimp WordPress widget to play nice with other widgets. It functions fine; It is a layout issue. The spacing with other widgets is off. Basically the widget beneath MailChimp is jammed right up against it, while spacing is proper for the other widgets. In fact, if I make MailChimp the last widget, everything looks nice.
I think the ability to add a tag in your widget would fix this. The generic “text widget” that ships with WordPress includes this feature so it might be as easy as to copy and paste that code into Mailchimp?
I put the html code for a paragraph and it got stripped so my message might not be clear.
It should read the “ability to add a paragraph tag in your widget would fix this.”
Just updated my Mailchimp plugin for wordpress. It looks messed up now. The enter fields and the text are in different areas and span a huge space on my sidebar.
Any ideas?
It could be other WP plugins you have installed that aren’t getting along well with ours, or it could be some other code on your blog. Only way to tell is if you contact support, and they can look at the blog in detail.
hi i’ve just installed mailchimp and so far so good! however i want to splash the sign up form below the header of the site across every single page. i don’t have widgets on all my pages so how can i achieve this?
is there a set of tags i can drop in to call the form?
thanks
I would like to use the mailchimp widget in 2 sidebars – the main pages and the blog pages. There is only one widget option to place. Any ideas?
I’m using the MailChimp widget with the Perfect Box theme, and the mailchimp.js file interferes with the nice slider images that are used in the Perfect Box template. I can only run the MailChimp widget with ‘fancy’ jquery turned off in the settings for MailChimp.
When jquery is turned on for the template, the slider in the header does not work, nor do the dropdown menus in the main menu bar.
No biggie though, I just turned off the jquery support – although it would be nice
I have installed this plugin, but I only get a deactivate and edit button – there is no way for me to use it. I have wordpress version 2.9, and I have had this problem with various other plugins. any ideas what would cause this?
Anita, once you’ve activated it, then go to the ‘Settings’ menu in the left sidepanel, then click on ‘MailChimp Setup’ – you can enter all the configuration there.
Once it’s ready, you then go to Appearance ->> Widgets and place the widget where you need it.
Works like a charm.
I just installed the MC plugin and everything seems to be installed properly however when a person subscribes, it doesn’t add that person to the subscriber list in MC. I have installed twice and I keep having the same problem.
Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.
The plugin uses our double optin process. Once the link in the confirmation message is clicked, you’ll see them appear on your list.
There is a long and well documented history of the js in this plugin conflicting with other WP plugins, which is a real shame. For instance, when js is enabled, it stops the shopp e-commerce plugin from being able to add products. Are there any plans to squash this bug?
Can you elaborate on “long and well documented history of the js in this plugin conflicting with other WP plugins”? There are a couple mentions of js issues from ages ago (ie, cleaned up long ago) above, but none that really say that. The one that comes closest is the jquery slider one, and it’s hard to call that our issue since we are using the jquery distributed with WordPress itself. My guess is that something similar is happening with Shopp.
If you can elaborate, or would like to further discuss, the best place to do it is in the plugin’s forum – http://wordpress.org/tags/mailchimp?forum_id=10
Unfortunately we can’t purchase every paid plugin every time someone believes our plugin is breaking is causing a conflict with something, so you may also want to mention this to them or have someone technical dig into it and determine the underlying issue. If there’s something specific we’ve screwed up, we’ll be happy to take a look into it.
The button alignment on my MC widget needs sorting… at the moment it is dropped into the middle of the widget whereas the email input box is left aligned. That makes the widget look clunky
Ideally I need to subscribe button to sit aligned to the right of the email input box. That’ll also make the widget thin and sleek. How can I do this? I dont have coding knowledge but can throw code in as instructed…
Hi!
I’ve installed wp plugin for mailchimp and it’s working fine.
I’ve like to change the size of the signup form. Is that possible? I don’t seem to be able to find any options to fo that.
TIA!
Hi, how do i center the form field please? Which code do i wrap the center tags around please?
thats all
Thanks for a great plugin
Steve
