A while ago we told you we were working on an iPad app called Chimpadeedoo that you can put in your storefront and collect email subscriptions (customers absolutely love tinkering with shiny new iPads). Chimpadeedoo is a simple, beautiful app that syncs up with your MailChimp list. It just went live in the iTunes App Store:
Many thanks to the folks who helped us beta test. Lots of ideas for a 2nd version! Oh, and be sure to check out MailChimp for the iPhone as well.
Very nice guys. I can imagine what you guys are monkeying around with for the next version. I’d love to see an option in the admin interface for creating our own backgrounds. Also, one thing I recommend is to give a little more info about the hidden link to get back to the settings. Took me a few minutes to find it in the upper right hand corner.
Yeah, we have a ton of ideas for this moving forward. I also had that, “Where’s the secret spot?” moment as well.
I knew there had to be a secret spot. I found it here. Thank you.
Very nice! Just downloaded it on my iPad and set it up. It was a bit tricky trying to get back to the options after e initial setup (like to change the theme or list) but I figured it out.
This will definitely come in handy at trade shows.
An option to upload a local photo or logo to the app would be a nice feature. That way if we have our logo on our iPad, the signup form will be mo’ branded for our business.
I just sent out my first mailchimp campaign today (and exceeded the industry averages :) Thanks for the awesome service!
Any plans on making the reports iPhone app iPad compatible?
Very excited, we are bolting one to the counter at http://shocolate.com.au very soon – Melbournites drop in – thank you Mailchimp.. “Feels good to be loved”
eep eep
Hey Phillip,
Would be pretty keen to hear how you have bolted down your iPad..
Can you let me know via email?
simon at myambition.com
In theory, this is a great idea. In practice, it will undoubtedly work beautifully, for a while.
And then your iPad will get snatched. 8-)
Hey Michael,
Something like this might help:
http://eepurl.com/zVCB
Looks like they all share the same dock connector.
http://eepurl.com/zVIx
This would also work:

A proper dock for locking ipads to walls, stands etc. is actually available. Has the option of blocking the Home button so users can’t quit the running app.

Its nice, granted, I will have to figure out a use for it.
I would really like to see a full MailChimp iPad app that would let me create & send campaigns and basically do everything I can do from the website. That would be killer for me.
Kevin, I will ditto that and vote it up to the max. An iPad app for creating and managing campaigns would be excellent. Although, I must say, with the excellent iPad Browser capability, I’m doing that already in the MailChimp admin interface.
what’s the point of an iPad app that does everything the website does? Just open your web browser and use it.
It does something different than what the web app does, actually. It’s much more focused. But yeah, you could also do something similar if you want to put your computer or laptop on your store’s countertop or at your kiosk.
I can sort of see what Rachel is saying. With Safari on the iPad and a signup form that the customer designs and places on their website (or the mailchimp hosted one), it could sort of do the same thing as the app.
Just open safari to a single webpage made with that focus (signup form) and it would serve the same function.
Seems like this might actually work better as a web app that the list admin can enabled via the mailchimp backend and then point their browser (safari on ipad or iphone) to?
Totally possible to just use a browser on the iPad, or even on a laptop. The advantage to a dedicated app on your iPad is that it’s “locked down” and people can’t use the browser to pull up, say, their own company’s home page (or something nasty), and then walk away.
It’s worth noting that Chimpadeedoo started down the path of being something much more robust, but when we took a prototype to an actual coffee shop and put it on the counter, we noticed that people were 1) extremely fascinated with the iPad, and 2) in a hurry to enter their email, and then get out of the way for the next person in line. So we regrouped and decided to make it uber simple and pretty. We’ve got ideas for future releases, though. Many thanks to everyone for the feedback.
I just receive my Ipad and can’t edit my campaigns. I can see the campaign, start edit and a big black square is blocking everything I want to do so I have not been able to edit my campaign. Am I doing something wrong?
any plans to allow us to add our ‘required’ fields from our current sign-up forms?
Glenn, we’ve been discussing that, yes. We’re trying to keep the “typing at the counter” time to a minimum, b/c when we were testing with our prototype, people seemed to just want to get out of the way for the next customer. Asking for fname, lname, birthday, and all the normal stuff a store might ask was a bit much. But we’ve got some tricks up our sleeves. :-)
i’m sure you do Ben ;-) you guys are ALWAYS on top of your game!
I was very excited about this app until I saw that I could not use my customized sign up form. We have to have email, fname, lname, zip code and birthdate with OUR logo on the form.
Nice idea but you made the wrong assumptions about time needed to sign up. We have information that explains/entices people to sign up for our list.
Just put this on our iPad. I can’t figure out how to get back to this app’s settings to change the background, etc. THANKS FOR BEING SO AWESOME!!
There’s a secret “hot corner” that unlocks it. Tap the top-right corner.
Bah dah bop bah bah. I’m lovin’ it!
Just downloaded it! We are super excited to use it during our Fall Trade shows! No more paper sign ups with email addresses we can’t read! THANK YOU!
Jillian, I hear ya. When I think about the money that we have spent renting crappy scanners so we can scan badges at trade shows it kinda makes me sick. That whole system is really messed up. I’m really excited about not just the cost savings but the time savings this app will bring to so many businesses.
Hey guys!…awesome love it. Hey I’m trying to get an mascot costumes made for our company characters (take a look: http://bit.ly/gmaids), where did you guys had freddie made at?…and if possible how much should I might investing?
Thanks,
Juan
Hi Juan, we used Maydwell Mascots. You can check out the making-of here: http://blog.mailchimp.com/freddie-comes-to-life/
LOVE the app! Wish I was crafty enough to hack the background & change it as I have events this week and next that this will be perfect for. As for the iPad getting stolen, my staff keeps a hold of the thing and hands it to someone to enter in their email (or do it for them…) We do have a book stand we use as an iPad stand (bookhug.com) but it’s not ‘secure’. Thanks again for such an amazing product!
Will this app store emails if there is no connection? Would be more useful than a webpage if so.
Yes, it stores emails offline, then syncs to your mailchimp account when you’re online.
Ok after a successful weekend of an expo I have collected a batch of names but I cannot see how to push a sync, however,a test with me connected to the web instantly enters this to my list, from my iPad, help please
I can’t wait to see what your app has in store for us in the future. This is a KILLER app, and hopefully will have more features in future versions.
Fantastic App and I really hate to criticise but here’s my wish list for future additions…
1. Ability to add more and custom fields. Not all of us will be using it in a store. I’ll be in no rush in my application so more = better.
2. Larger choice of backgrounds or just plain colours
3. Ability to add own custom backgrounds.
4. Ability to alter Font, size, colour, orientation.
5. Ability to insert logo or even better multiple images With drag and drop pinch and zoom.
Any chance of something like this also coming to the android platform?
Yes, there’s a very good chance everything we do for iPhone will go to Android too.
we need to capture fist name last name to run a campign!! Is there a way to include it on the chimpadeedoo form?
Otherwise we will have to guess or put random info into our campaigns.
Come on mailchimp………everything else is greeeat
I have to echo some of the other comments; user selected backgrounds would take this app from great to awesome!
Yep, that’s live with v1.2 of Chimpadeedoo
This kinda of ipad app amkes the pen and paper look archaic! I know that in a year or 2 such an app will be the norm but for the few companies who use it – the increase in subscriptions will be awesome.
its great the v1.2 has the ability to use user generated backgrounds – is 1.2 out yet or is their a date for release?
Very solid guys. Loved it on the iPhone, but this is pure bliss!! Please stay awesome…I truly love mail chimp!!
I was helping out an event where we used two ipads running the app for the collection of email addresses.
It went quite well but I would like to make one suggestion.
When people are presented with a screen with the email address field displayed – more often than not they have not idea what to do next. We found that if we tapped the field to bring up the keyboard – it then became obvious. So after each person had ‘registred’ we would bring the keyboard up again manually.
if there was some way of locking the keyboard display on – we would have captured more data – as it was I could see people lookingm not knowing what to do and then walking away.
I am NOT an ipad user so I dont know if this is possible within the ipad settings but we certainly could not find it.
Apart from that, it was absolutely brilliant.
Hi, there should be a way to localize the text on the subscribe Button. That would come in really handy for all your customers here in Europe. Also a settings option to enter first and last name would be great.
Other than that, Great App.
Well I dunno when it happened but there is a new vertion out and it has a few more options like the much requested custom backgrounds.
However it doesn’t work for me. :(
Every time I select a photo the app crashes and closes.
Anyone else got this working?
(i’m running 4.2)
Danny
any chance of this appearing on the iPhone?
Is that Octane?!?
yep!
I’d like to know when mail chimp will support radiating on campaign content on iPad, or is it possible now? Very frustrating to have spent hundreds on the iPad only to find I can’t edit the content of a campaign while on the go.
Just wondering what the ideal size should be for the custom theme background image template? The thing is that when iPad switches rotation the working background now has white bars around the edges, and the other way round too.
I was wonder if you guys can suggest a size I should be playing around with.
Great app though. Nice and focused.
I have just purchased an iPad (old model, not new one). I am trying to edit an existing newsletter template. When I try to enter (click on) a section on the template the “edit your content” box appears, but it is empty and just sits there.
BTW, I have turn off pop up blocker and allowed all cookies.
Hi Joel,
I too would love to use MailChimp from my iPad from time to time, but there’s a ton of fancy-schmancy code inside MailChimp that the iPad just doesn’t support yet.
MailChimp’s a pretty big, huge application (you could almost look at it as a suite of apps: design, database management, content editing, analytics) so it’s extremely difficult to change it just for the iPad (no matter how awesome these things are). But we’re doing a *lot* in the mobile arena:
http://blog.mailchimp.com/tag/mobile/
so I’m confident that in due time we’ll be writing and sending MailChimp campaigns from our iPads. Hopefully Mr. Jobs won’t invent something new by then.
[...] little while ago we launched Chimpadeedoo, our first iPad app. It’s a simple way to collect email addresses at your store register, at an arts & craft [...]
Is this ap available with the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 as well? I’m purchasing a tablet solely for Chimpadeedoo! and my business and need to know…Thanks!
Currently, Chimpadeedoo is only available for the iPad, but stay tuned to the blog for future developments.
