We’re very happy to announce that MailChimp now integrates with SurveyMonkey (and when we get happy, we start giving away cool t-shirts, so keep reading).
With this integration, you can send a survey link to your list from MailChimp, and then do some really cool tracking and targeting. Here’s how it all works…
First, you need to activate the SurveyMonkey integration inside your MailChimp Account Settings:
Then you’d build a survey like you always do in SurveyMonkey. In my example, I’m sending an internal survey to staff about a grilled cheese party that we won from sponsoring a crazy kickstarter project. The survey looks something like:
When you’re finished building your survey, click the little “Send survey” button:
then choose the “Distribute with MailChimp” option:
You’ll be prompted to sign in to MailChimp:
After you do, SurveyMonkey will “hand off” the survey to MailChimp for delivery.
If one were to construct a technical diagram or flowchart, this “data transfer process” would look something like:
technically speaking, of course.
Anyway, after the survey is passed to MailChimp, you’ll choose your list and then specify a subject line.
By the way, for my particular survey, I decided to use our Subject Line Suggester to see how other campaigns have performed with “survey” in the subject:
My takeaway was that informal and casual subject lines, like “quick survey” did better than very formal “Annual Survey From ___. ”
So I went with, “quick grilled cheese survey.”
When it’s time to choose your template, you’ll be provided with a default SurveyMonkey template that you can customize to match your brand. There are actually three SurveyMonkey email templates you can switch around and choose from:
(these are part of the 33 new templates our UX team just released)
Here’s what the basic one looks like:
Then, just send the email to your list.
When you open your campaign stats, go to the “Advanced Reports” section:
And you get the following stats from SurveyMonkey:
As you can see, we’ll show you how many people have completed the survey so far, how many have started, and how many people haven’t started at all. You can even send a followup to those who have not started:
or send a gentle reminder of deadlines to those who started but did not finish;
or send a thank you note to those who completed.
Starting from MailChimp?
I should note that you can do all this in reverse. You’d start within MailChimp, create a new campaign (it can even be an A/B test campaign), pick a SurveyMonkey template, and then specify which SurveyMonkey survey to link to:
THIS IS BANANAS
You’re probably thinking “this is BANANAS!” and we couldn’t agree more. In fact, we have 500 commemorative “This is Bananas” t-shirts to give away:
Just follow @mailchimp on twitter and keep your eyes peeled (pun intended) for an announcement in the next couple days. If you’re not the following type, no worries.
The first 1,000 users who send a SurveyMonkey survey through MailChimp with this integration will get a free MailChimp t-shirt. You’ll know you won when you see this screen inside MailChimp:
Simian powers, unite!

Yay, you primates rock! Just yesterday I was talking to a client (I’m a marketing copywriter) about using a survey to follow up on services to their customers and I suggested doing it via email instead of over the phone or in writing. And here you are offering extra simplicity. It’s like you did it just for ME! :)
I’ll be snagging one of those cool t-shirts. I already have one and love it! But mostly, I’ll be thanking my lucky stars that I have the two coolest banana munchers on the planet helping me with my marketing pursuits! ;) As you guys say … EEP!!
This isn’t working for me. I’ve made it all the way to the ‘Send Survey’ but after I click it there is no ‘Send via MailChimp’ option.
Help?
Never mind… it can’t be used with exissting surveys. If I create a brand new survey though it works fine. Sorry!
Oh – good to know that it doesn’t work with existing surveys!!!
I’ve tried several times & still not gotten the screen for the t-shirt. Suggestions? I’ve followed your directions…
The screen I showed is actually something you see after you click a confirmation link in an email that we send. Have you received the email? It may only send after you’ve sent what we perceive to be a real survey to a real list (and not one test).
real big tandem you have there! great collaboration i should say. good news and work!

I had the free gift screen before when I started up with Mail Chimp, but it never actually went through and I never got my t-shirt :( Hopefully this one will work better!
OHHHH – I wish this had been last week. I had to just copy and past my Survey Monkey survey link into my Mail Chimp email.
Bummer – I would have LOVED a new shirt.
BTW – I actually saw someone in a parking lot wearing a a Mail Chimp shirt last Saturday in Canton.
I thought that was cool.
I love you guys! MailChimp rocks!!!
The fact that MailChimp makes Email Marketing fun is just amazing, considering writing HTML for email is akin to torture in many web design / development circles.
In fact, most people I know wouldn’t touch email marketing design and development with a ten foot pole. When I hear sentiments like that, I tell them, “that’s because you’ve never tried Mailchimp!”
Wow! This is really cool, thank you! And perfect timing, as I had just decided to do a survey.
But, from within Mailchimp, I can’t seem to find any option to bring my survey into my current campaign (though I can see it on the integration page). And when I try it from the Survey Monkey end, I can’t bring the survey into my pretty (and all polished up) template. Sad…
On the other hand, I suppose it will work soon–and you all are so wonderful, it’s not a big deal (the shirt thing just made me greedy :)
Never mind, I see my error: Must pick Survey Monkey template. Thank you!
love,
Alia
Brilliant stuff :) Can I ask, was the decision to go with MailChimp instead of, say, Campaign Monitor at all related to their name and monkey related theme? Not that I have anything against that (in fact, I think it’s downright awesome!), I was just curious.
When Monkeys fall in love, beautiful things happen
When I clicked on the Authorize Connection button for the Survey Monkey integration, it disconnects our Facebook integration. Is this normal? Does it “really” disconnect our Facebook?
Thanks for your help. I am new to all of this.
Harmony
Thanks! You guys are awesome. :)
Harmony
Although I think you guys are awesome and your continued product improvements are brilliant, I cannot help think this unholy union between simians might lead to something horrible in light of this weekend’s new movie (or documentary) http://www.apeswillrise.com/
I’m just saying…
I assure you no chimps, monkeys or unicorns were harmed in the creation of this integration.
Don’t know what to make of a t-shirt featuring a banana protruding from the fly of a pair of jeans. I assume you were shooting for playful and hip, but I think you landed in “creepy sexual harasser” territory. I guess I won’t enter the contest.
To each his own. FTR, I believe those were internal “MailChimp staff only” shirts, and it’s the green ones we’re giving out en masse.
Do you have to pay for Survey Monkey seperatly, or is it included on the account?
Hi April,
You’d need to setup and pay SurveyMonkey separately.
Love it!!
I have a few surveys in SurveyMonkey that I send out about once a month to different groups of clients. In SurveyMonkey, I create a new collector then upload e-mail addresses. When I tested this new integration, I wasn’t prompted to create a new collector.
When I sent a test SurveyMonkey survey via MailChimp, recipients landed on a “this survey is currently closed” page. So I’m guessing that this integration needs to be used on a NEW survey.
Looking forward to trying this again to see if survey responses can be tracked back to the list member who answered them.
Yes, it needs to be used with surveys created after our integration.
So does this integration allow me to capture the email address of survey respondents to SurveyMonkey without asking survey respondents to complete an “email address” field on a survey?
Looks great but how can I match the answers to my contacts in mailchimp…
Looks like the only way would be to ask again for Demographic information in the survay (i.e. email) ?
Is there another way ?
Thx for your reply
Because some surveys are anonymous, we didn’t want to deal with privacy issues of linking email to specific responses.
Any plans to build this integration for Wufoo??
MailChimp just keeps getting better! I seriously love everything about your company and services! Next time I visit ATL, I’ll have to drool all over you in person… not just online. ;)p
Completed the process through MC and it integrated to SM perfectly.
And your last grey MailChimp shirt is by far the most comfortable T-Shirt I have…
I agree with @MarketingWebDev — the soft grey mailchimp shirt (hand drawn) is THE most comfy t-shirt in my closet. Although I believe it’s the same material as my (mt) mediatemple shirt, so I guess they’re “tied”. ;)
Wow! My staff suggested we send our customers a survey email last week and this week you grant my wish! Next week I’m thinking yacht in the Bahamas!? (closes eyes and crosses fingers!)
Thanks you guys!
this is very timely!
sent our first survey but no t-shirt :/ ah well… all is good! YAY to Mail Chimp …YAY to Survery Monkey!

Yay! I’ve been wanting this for 2 years! Thank you! Now if only you’d create an easier and better looking template for displaying all our social media icons on our newsletter. Check out how Constant Contact does it. :-)
I haven’t tried this yet, but I love it! I can’t wait to use it.
Please consider linking up with MindBody Online. It would be AWESOME if the email info from MindBody automatically synced with MailChimp.
Thanks!
This is awesome guys, always keeping ahead of the pack which is why we always come back to MailChimp. This might be a stupid questions but can I use the responses from surveys to automatically segment my database? i.e. if they like Gouda Cheese, can I segment my list for the people that like gouda so when I go to send them info on Cheese in another email they only get info on Gouda. or is it more of a manual affair?
this is what I (aka my boss) is hoping to see as well.

MailChimp Integrates with SurveyMonkey http://t.co/1HCa1so Pretty cool. Just testing this out.
Great idea, can’t wait to use it! But, still waiting on my t-shirt from the last give away, what gives?
Hey Bill,
Sorry, but we give away a looooot of t-shirts, so you’ll have to get specific about which giveaway it was, or if it was a prize from within the app. After that, we have to trust the US Postal system (and then whatever postal system we pass it off to overseas) to actually make the delivery. Sending shirts is harder than emails (go figure).

Ben,
I have a dream (it’s true, at night, I dream about email innovation) that people will be able to complete SurveyMonkey emails INSIDE their inbox, without having to visit SurveyMonkey.com.
This would minimize the significant drop off from CTR. Do you think this will ever be possible?
Thanks!

It’s not so much a surveymonkey/mailchimp limitation. Unfortunately, a lot of email apps out there just won’t reliably render forms and surveys.
Yeah forms in emails are a no go.
But theoretically inline replies (for SIMPLE forms) could be possible. Kind of like how some trouble ticket systems or project management systems allow replies/updates via email, as long as you type above/below the line, etc. Granted it would take some monkeying to accomplish this behind the scenes ;)
Big news from MailChimp — the email marketing giant now offers SurveyMonkey integration. Awesome! http://ow.ly/5WcSI
#SurveyMonkey is now intergrated with #MailChimp. Awesome! http://bit.ly/nLSBfl
This is great! But I need to know if i can embed it into an existing template that I have instead of using a SurveyMonkey template, assuming I’m starting from MailChimp not SurveyMonkey, coz I’d want to see the stats from here ;-) What’s the best way to do it?

Just curious. I use multiple different collectors on Survey Monkey for the same survey. I then filter the results of surveys answered by the collector. Am I able to send a unique link via Mail Chimp for each collector? I am not seeing that as an option, only seeing it for the base Survey when I click the “send survey” button.
I’ve seen a few other requests for it and I’d like to put my vote in for a mindbody integration. Yeah constant contact already does it and it looks like they’ve integrated with another email provider too. But hands down… Mailchimp is the best and I really don’t want to switch. Come on chimpers, throw me a Nana
We can’t possibly build integrations for everybody. So instead, we created a $1million integration fund to pay others to do it. You can ask MindBody if they’d consider doing this, or if they know any developers who would:

This is very cool BUT I have a question too – is there a way of integrating the [CustomData] merge field into a surveymonkey campaign via mailchimp? Alternatively, how can I see what unique ID relates to who filled out the survey? HELP!

Hey, I been using mail chimp and survey monkey — so am glad they are now speaking to each other. question? is it possible to embed the survey in my organization’s newsletter template?
I love the idea of being able to integrate Survey Monkey into a Mail Chimp email. Great idea. I am however finding the application very limited. I would love to be able to make it form part of our newsletter as a regular short survey. Alternatively insert it into our custom template. Having played with the integration the only way it seems to link the two is to use the traditional link method. I have tried to insert the *|SMURL|* link but this does not work within a custom template. Please can you advise if it is possible to integrate a survey into a custom template?
MailChimp is relatively new to but I use SurveyMonkey for years and love it! This kind of integration is very convincing and a reason for me to focus more on MailCimp. I’m convinced it will help to grow the response rate of my surveys

How do you send a “reminder” email? It seems that you can choose to “Send to this Segment” within the Advanced Reports, but that starts a completely new campaign. Anyway to just send a quick reminder?
Hey guys,
We have a ‘download whitepaper’ on our blog in which we are utilizing Wufoo for the form and Mailchimp for those that opt-in to receive our newsletter.
I’d like to get a consistent email follow up (a week later) to those folks that downloaded our white paper. Anyway we can do this via this integration?
Thanks! eep eep!

I was interested in having a look at your pointer to Survey Monkey.
However, the site always comes up in German with no option to select any other language.
I live in Switzerland and there are three official languages: French, Italian and German. In this part of Switzerland we definitly DO NOT speak German and, as it is very much a multinational area, many non-nationals speak English.
Any website that assumes one language by the country of origin without the option to change the selection is just downright ARROGANT.
Hi Alex, are you perhaps having issues with the surveymonkey.com website? Our companies aren’t related in any way (except through the API integration), so you might want to report this to them instead.
does Mailchimp have the ability to set up alerts. After a survey question is answered a certain way, can an alert be set up to send to an external email?
Hi Amina, There’s not currently any triggers setup to work exactly as you’ve described, but we’ve recently made a bunch of changes: http://eepurl.com/q5zuL to autoresponders that might provide some options for you. Some of the most notable changes are triggering an autoresponder based on whether a campaign was opened or whether a link (even a particular link) within a campaign was clicked. This could even extend to the special link (it looks something like this: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/surveyid?c=*|UNIQID|* ) that is created for each of your subscribers when you send a SurveyMonkey survey. You could then send an autoresponder if they clicked the link to take the survey.
I’ve tried to do this integration both ways, first starting with mail chimp and then starting with survey monkey. When I get to the design page, I don’t see the survey questions, just general info from survey monkey. What am I doing wrong?
Hi Meghan, I’m sure you’re not doing anything wrong. The SurveyMonkey integration is a great way to send your survey to your subscribers. The setup is pretty straight forward and it sounds like you’ve already gotten through that. If you’re still having troubles at that spot, this short article will help you through: http://eepurl.com/eOLXA Once your connected and you’ve selected a SurveyMonkey auto-connect template under “pre-designed” templates, you’ll have a simple template with a button that includes a unique link to the survey for each specific subscriber. The actual survey isn’t in the email but still completed at SurveyMonkey. One of the great benefits of this integration is that your survey results can be seen not only in SurveyMonkey but also in MailChimp itself. This link: http://eepurl.com/eOZiA shows you how to get there. Once your subscribers start filling out the survey you’ll even be able to send a follow up email to those who haven’t started the survey if you wish.
I have sent a survey via mailchimp and it’s great – except that the cover note isnt visible by some recipients in Outlook. Am I doing something wrong or is the problem just specifically with that person or all Outlook users?
Hi Toby, I’m not entirely certain what problem you might be experiencing, but if you wouldn’t mind providing some additional details and maybe a screen shot to our support chimps I’m sure they’d be able to sort it out for you. They can be reached via chat or email at http://mailchimp.com/support
Hi,
I have had some success with this, but I can’t seem to get any information on which people have completed the survey within MailChimp. After sending out an invitation using the SurveyMonkey Template and completing the survey, I look at the list I sent it to. There are people who have clicked on the campaign email, but they are not registering as starting the survey. Any ideas?
Hi Suzanna, If you’re not using the SurveyMonkey template, that might be the reason for your unexpected results. If you’re using the SurveyMonkey template and still not seeing what you’d expect, it is always possible that they’re clicking other links within the email and never actually going to take the survey. Without seeing the campaign I can’t know for sure, but our support chimps could take a look and give you some additional insight without a problem. You can reach them at: http://mailchimp.com/support
Can we set up a survey that will automatically be emailed to customers a day or three after they receive their lobsters from us? And then get a print-out of those that reply?
Hi Andrew, There’s a few different ways you could go with this. If your customers opted into your list, you could trigger an autoresponder based on a purchase date (X days after) or even using ecommerce360 data you could trigger the autoresponder based on the purchase of a specific product. There’s other triggers you can use to start an autoresponder and you can read a bit more here: http://eepurl.com/raWnP but those are the two ways that come to mind first. Included in the autoresponder you could place your SurveyMonkey survey and then take a look at who has started the survey, who has not, and review answers as well. Our knowledge base has a nice article on how to get that part all setup. http://eepurl.com/eOLXA All that being said, this could also be viewed as transactional email and might work nicely with our transactional email system called Mandrill. If you start digging in and have additional questions our support chimps are happy to help: http://mailchimp.com/chat
I’m trucking to hitch my MailChimp account to SurveyMonkey but all my search results land me on a German langauge SurveyMonkey site. Is there a link to the USA survey monkey? Believe me, I’ve tried, but failed to find one. Wierd.
Well, if you’re needing current instructions to get things hooked up, this short article: http://eepurl.com/eOLXA should get you going. If you’re just needing to setup an account over at SurveyMonkey for their service, the following: http://www.surveymonkey.com seems to work just fine (and in English too!) If you have any other questions you can reach our support chimps at: http://mailchimp.com/chat
I was wondering if the Mail Chimp and Survey Monkey integration works if you are trying to do this in an auto responder template in Mail Chimp?
Hi Kate, If you’re using one of the Survey Monkey Autoconnect templates it does work with an Autoresponder. In the design step you can find the SurveyMonkey templates under “Pre-Designed” and then “Designer Templates” near the top on the left hand side.
Is there no way to get Survey Monkey results in the report without using the Survey Monkey template? I would like to use our custom template, and although I can link from the email to the survey, the results do not get pushed to Mail Chimp.
Hi Lee, I was doing some checking on this just to be sure, but it sounds like the “magic” that would pull the results back into MailChimp is indeed tied specifically to those particular templates.
