Whenever you import a list into MailChimp, you’ll notice a few more options to choose from, including Google Docs, Google Contacts, Batchbook, and CSV format (we previously only took tab-delimited).
What’s nice about the Google Docs integration is that if you use Google’s Form/Survey tool (which save data into a Google Docs spreadsheet), all that data you collect can be imported into MailChimp really easily.

If we use a google survey and then import the results, can we use autoresponders on those people?
Hi David, Our autoresponders can only go to people who double-opted-in through one of our signup forms. So importing contacts from a Google Survey would not work w/Autoresponders. If you’ve got a Google survey that you want customers to take, you might include a link to your autoresponder signup form, and give some incentive for customers to “receive these weekly tips on…” Or, you could create a MailChimp signup form using our form builder with lots of questions (but it’s not meant to be a full-fledged survey tool of course). Or, you could build a simple signup form in MailChimp for your autoresponder, and in the thank you page, include a link to your survey. None of these are perfect, but just a few ideas.
David, there is actually a way to do this fairly easily if you are using a Google Spreadsheet Survey/Form, though it may require repetitively importing your survey spread sheet.
The first step in MailChimp is to add a merge var to your list that is a “date” type. When your list has one of these, you can use it with an autoresponder – instead of “after signup”, you’ll pick “after date” and then select your date field from your list. Note: save yourself some headaches and *don’t* name your field “date” – maybe “survey time”.
Have you noticed that the survey/form-enabled spreadsheet automatically adds the “Timestamp” to the first column? When you import that spreadsheet, we will also pull in the Timestamp column. Now just map that to your new date fields (and the any other necessary fields), and you’ll be good to go.
One caveat – if you plan on setting up auto-responders that go out quickly, I’d suggest using no less than “2 days after” your date field just to make sure you don’t miss anyone.
um yeah, what Jesse said.
Okay, let me get this straight. I can use autoresponders on people that I sign up (using google docs or they sign a physical mailing list sheet). I just can’t do it based on signup date. I can base it on a date I put in a custom field though.
Correct.
If someone does not go through the MailChimp double-optin process, autoresponders based on “signup date” will not work. Autoresponders based on other date merge fields on your list will work.
I can understand about the autoreponders. What I don’t get is if there is a way to automatically sync new records in the Google form with Mailchimp.
Without manually, repetitively, importing the survey spread sheet.
OK, So I’m thinking of importing my contacts to mailchimp from a different autoresponder program (congrats on being so cool!)….
Does this mean that this date thing is some kind of workaround that I can use so that I can import my existing list without having to ask them to opt in again?
Thanks,
I have the same question as Yollana!
Yollana, when you import lists into MailChimp, we don’t require you to opt them in again. The date workaround mentioned is a way to send more “immediate” autoresponders, rather than timing them out.
What’s the quickest way to get all my contacts into MChimp? Currently I have all my contacts in Entourage.
Thanks
Is it possible to import contacts from Mac Mail?
Unfortunately, there doesn’t appear to be an app for that. If you google around, there are apps that help you export your Apple Address Book contacts, though.
Ben,
Is it possible to import a Google Doc into a campaign directly. We’ve a scenario, where our users will create an email in Google Docs and we need the ability to somehow email this out directly instead of copy-pasting.
Is it possible (either in google-apps integration or directly from mailchimp) to do this?
Thanks,
Singh
We have a tool called the email beamer (which is explained on this page), where you can send a message to a special email address, and we’ll convert it into a campaign for you. However, Google Docs has recently started adding a bunch of stuff in the header and footer, which might not make this a very pretty newsletter for you.
Alternatively, we have an “import by URL” feature, where you could theoretically publish a google doc to the web, then grab its URL, then import it into MailChimp. Then we’d automagically convert that into a campaign. Again, Google Docs adds a bunch of extra stuff to the header and footer, making it a non-optimal solution.
FWIW, I believe Google Docs might’ve added these things to prevent abuse.
Does this mean that I could create a webpage in Dreamweaver, using my website template, and MailChimp would create a newsletter that looks like my website template?
Yes. Here’s a KB article if you’re interested:

Hi Ben,
I’m testing out Mailchimp’s integration with Google Apps. I can’t find much in the way of documentation of this on your site (or elsewhere on the net, for that matter), so perhaps you could offer some pointers?
I have two questions: firstly, is it at all possible to import Google Contacts groups as lists? I’ve tried this, but Mailchimp imported only some of my Google Contacts (there were about 103 contacts missing from the import for some reason).
Lastly – any plans for integrating Google Groups mailing lists into your list import feature? That would be very, very useful.
Thanks for such a great tool, btw…
Hello the same question as Nick, could we get a reply please?
Thank you
Yes, also curious about the use of groups — since we spend all this time organising our contacts in Google Docs, there must be a path to get these groups to Mailchimp properly. Perhaps routing through another system first so that the groups can come across?
In MailChimp, you’d setup a list with groups in them.
For example, a restaurant sets up a “Monthly newsletter” list, with the following “Favorite foods” groups: Pizza, Chicken, Chocolate, Pie.
Then, in MailChimp, you go to your list, and view your groups.
Each group allows you to import members.
Open up the group and choose to import members.
Choose the “Google Docs” import option, and select the doc to import. Would be easiest if you create a separate doc for each group before importing, because we’ll import the entire doc into that group.
Okay, so that requires an extra step on our part. Possible but not the most elegant solution I think that Mailchimp is capable of. It would be great if the groups came across automatically as well?
Hopefully you can consider that for future.. given that Google Apps has just released the new contact manager to standard users I can foresee a need..
If you have a moment, send an email to ben@ with details on how you’re using Google’s contact manager in conjunction w/MailChimp. Right now, it’s a basic “Send a batch of emails from here to there once, and be done with it” process. If you plan to use it differently, we’d like to hear about it.
Just getting started ourselves, testing, testing, testing – listened to one of MailChimp’s webinars this AM and the response we received to the idea of importing only those members of a specific Google group was that we need to do an export to something and then import from that something.
As to Nick’s first Q –
Perhaps there’s a limit on the number of records that can be accepted on a single import? that would be strange…
Were there 103 contacts with no assigned Google group (“blank” in a defined field is an unacceptable value)?
Am I misunderstanding the question?
As to Q 2 –
If MailChimp were, on the import of records from a Google contact list, allow a record selection by (Google) group, that would indeed be a useful feature.
And I too am impressed with this product.
Hey Ben. I’m just getting my feet wet and I am trying to create a contact list without having to enter the info for each contact. I know that I’m suppose to be able to import contacts from Google, CSV files, etc., but cannot seem to be able navigate to the page/window on Mail Chimp to do that. Can you kindly assist?
See if this doc helps:
http://kb.mailchimp.com/article/how-do-i-create-and-import-my-list
If you’ve already tried that, but are having probs, it could be because at the current moment, we’re experiencing a little slowness in that area of the app. Should clear up by tomorrow.
This step refers to some function that is not present in my list menu:
STEP 3: Click on create new list, enter the set up information and then “import list” (or if you already have a list set up, simply click “import” from the List Tab).
….or I’m not getting to the right window when I click on “Create New List”.
Hey Ben. I figured it out. Import successful. No need to reply. I now need to determine why none of the first and last names were included in the import.
Hi Ben! You seem pretty knowledgeable :) And this website looks really cool.
The company I work for wants to take a list of email addresses from excel and integrate it with mailchimp. The question is: Without us having their first names can mailchimp detect them automatically from the email addresses?
Thanks!
Well, I’ve got at least one person out there fooled. :-)
No, we can’t auto-detect first names from the email address. Wouldn’t be very reliable. Once, I tried doing that when I finally met a neighbor in real life (who I had previously only corresponded with over email). Turns out the email address, even though it looked like a legit first name, was a combination of her maiden name and her dog or something. Slightly embarrassing.
Anyway, when you send your 1st email, you can include an “update your profile” link so that the recipient can give you their name.
Here’s an example: http://blog.mailchimp.com/unsubscribe-links-vs-profile-settings/
Instructions for the profile link: http://kb.mailchimp.com/article/how-can-i-add-a-update-profile-link
There’s been a lot of discussion about how to get people to retroactively submit more information (like fname, lname, birthdays) to their profiles. Some people have talked about incentives, like coupons, or free prizes. One thing you could do (and I wouldn’t do this on your very first campaign) is make a joke out of it. If you can get away with a little humor, send an email that says, “Please help us update our information. According to our records, your name is __ your country of origin is ____ etc”
But throw in absurdly wrong data to make your customers laugh and want to help. “Our records indicate your name is Angelina Jolie, you were born on Jupiter, you own 3 goats,” etc.
Trying to get my around importing lists and can’t find the right answer. I’d like to not only import the email addresses but actually create the new list too. My problem is that I have about 100 shops who will want to send out emails with their unique shop address on the bottom. The only way I can see to do this is to create 100 lists manually and change the footer contact address in the bit that says “Is this the correct contact info for this list?” Is this the only way or am i missing something? It’s possible I am :-)
Hi Craig, Probably best to reach out to our support team for help with this. mailchimp.com/support/
@Craig
Not sure if you question was answered, but for those who read this, have you tried using “Smart/Conditional Merge Tags”? Then you only need One email template. Just place the merge tag in the email footer which would display a different store address based on each contact group. I use it to show a different graphic and message for each group in my list. You would have One list, separated into Groups (store address) and use One email Template.
One way (good for a few groups, not sure about 100):
With our sign-up form (http://eepurl.com/b0N6T) I created an “Email Group” that can be selected as they sign-up. Then when I send my email newsletters each group receives a different message based on their group.
Sample I use (my default sign-up group is “Resident” in case they forget to select one):
*|INTERESTED:HOA Email Group:Resident|* *|FNAME|*, did you know volunteers are the heart of a successful community and association. *|END:INTERESTED|*
*|INTERESTED:HOA Email Group:Board Member|* *|FNAME|*, thank you for supporting our HOA as a Board Member. *|END:INTERESTED|*
I have this for set for six (6) different groups and each group displays its own graphic and message for each receiver.
Another way for large lists is to place the address for each store as a field for each contact. Then just place the merge tag for that address in the footer (like you would use the *|FNAME|* tag).
Editing/adding the address for each store (export/edit/import)or using Groups in your list may be easier than having several email templates.

Hi, I was wondering if it’s possible to change the used Google Account ?
I authorized my personnal GoogleAccount but then realized some other people were to use MailChimp and would be able to access all my docs, so I revoked access from Google Settings granted to MailChimp but I can’t figure out how to grant access to another Google Account which everyone can use (instead of mine) :S
Sorry if I’m not clear enough and thanks anyway :)
Bye

I FWD’d your question to our support team, Camille. You should get an email from them shortly.
Thanks a lot :)
Actually I’ve been to http://…].admin.mailchimp.com/account/integrations and removed the registered GoogleAccount.
Bye
Can MailChimp automatically synchronize new records in the Google form to the Mailchimp database?
Any tip is welcome.
*bump*
Any response to BlinX’s question? I have the same question, though really needing two-way integration between google docs and mailchimp. Using Google Docs to maintain a member database for our non-profit, which we use to manage numerous activities (phone calls, snail mailings, activity planning, etc) and managing the spreadsheet through MailChimp is awkward. To keep the two databases up to date with one another would involve repeated imports of the origin spreadsheet to catch updates for phone calls and snail mailings, and then re-export of updates from MailChimp to catch email blast updates in our origin database. Seems like an integration between the two sources would be of benefit to many. Are there any solutions that allow this?
Did anybody get any answers on this point? I’m trying to design the process around keeping my list current and it seems like it would be messy to copy the whole list over top every single time but I don’t know any other way to go about capturing the changes to contacts…
Hi Andrew, There isn’t any auto-syncing native to MailChimp to do what your asking, but it appears the guys over at Zapier have something that might work for you. Here’s a link to their integration: Google Docs Forms Integration
Anyone tried this yet for synchronizing between google docs and mailchimp: https://zapier.com
Thx for the post. Anyway to send attachments also?
Well, yes–and no. Explanation and tutorial here: http://blog.mailchimp.com/adding-file-attachments-to-mailchimp-email-campaigns/
hi i want to use google docs to make a survey. however i already have my questions on a word document. is there a way to attach the questions to google docs and run it like a normal survey?
Hi Ben,
Once I import all my contact from Google contacts into created lists on mailchimp and my contact gets revised on Google would it update automatically on my Mailchimp list? In your opinion what do you think gets better response if the marketing email came from the company itself for each individual staff through their contact list? Thank you,
Hi, I have a question along the lines of MK and Mike P, is there a two way sync / integration option with Mailchimp and Google Contacts, if I update a contact in Google will it pull over? Many thanks
I’m with Kath and MK, I would like to have Google contacts/groups set up that mirror my lists/groups in mirror MailChimp then automatically sync when a change is made to MailChimp. I don’t see a need to go the other way.
Can I import a predesigned newsletter into Mailchimp?
Hi Daniel, You sure can import a predesigned newsletter via several different options including zip file or from a url: http://eepurl.com/pRdfL You can also make use of our email beamer that allows you to send your campaign to a special email address associated with your list. You can find out more about email beamer here: http://eepurl.com/pRdXv
