Is it possible to have your sign-up forms in two languages concurrently?
How do you mean, “concurrently”?
I think he means a signup page where the user can select, which language (s)he wants to have the mailing list (and obviously, the signup form).
Our newsletter would ideally be available both in Finnish and English. Seems currently we need to maintain two different lists for this. At least, I would like to get the statistics etc. merged for these two lists. We’ll be sending identical (but translated) content to both of them.

An update on how we chose to do it.
We have only one Newsletter list. There’s a user setting for the language but we don’t show it in the order form. Since our site will be bilingual, we simply subscribe the person with the language that he/she was viewing.
As to the ajax response coming only in English (“Almost finished. …”) we catch that by JavaScript and show our own, translated message instead. We also translate the “you’re already subscribed” messages but others (less frequent) we show as they come from MC.
I guess we can live with this.
I see that translation into Turkish is now supported. Just to be sure, could you verify if that means, that Turkish characters such as the s with a dot below or the i without a dot are supported?
@Zeynep – What we mean by Turkish translation is that our signup process is now translated (thanks to our Turkish volunteer users). Your signup forms, thank you pages, welcome emails, etc. I think you’re talking about our application, where you actually create email campaigns. In that case, we support UTF-8 which may or may not cover Turkish. I don’t know for sure. But given we have Turkish users in the first place, I’d assume so. You might try setting up a free trial and giving it a full blown Turkish test.

OK, we have a client that wants to translate our existing newsletters into Japanese and send to his distribution list abroad. Would he import our English content into a template first, then select ‘Japanese’ language? Does it translate, or would he translate it first, then import the content in Japanese into the template? Just trying to understand the necessary steps.
Translate first, then import content. Our translations are for the subscription process (signup form, thank you emails, etc). We also have translation tags you can insert that will allow recipients to see your content translated to other languages if they click. Just search our blog for “TRANSLATE merge tag”

I have translated the response in the ‘signup & thank you page’ to ‘Bijna Klaar’.
The text below that was automatically translated, and is shown on the AJAX page in Dutch. Only the ‘Almost finished’ message is still in English. i believe this is a bug, since the rest of the text on the form is translated correctly.
Also, the ‘Subscribe’ button value is not translated, in the full signup form it is translated to Dutch, but in the embedded version it stays English. However, you can change it easily in the generated javascript code.

Hi Oleg, FWIW, almost every word in the dictionary is now a “spam word.” But to answer your question more directly, the inclusion of a foreign language for our app isn’t linked to how our (or any other) anti-spam filters view your campaigns.

As long as MailChimp relies on automatic translations, it’s not going to be good enough for us.
This may vary by language, but the current Finnish translations simply suck. Please let people have overrides over the machine translations and we’ll be interested to help make the translations rock solid.
This is not only biting me in our own newsletter, but ordering pages of others using automated translation makes the system seem like SPAM. Do *not* trust on automated translations, at least not for all the languages.
Asko, you said the translations are “biting me in our own newsletter” so I wanted to make sure we’re talking about the same thing…
The translations that we use in the signup form process are actually done by humans. We paid money for all that. Some were done great, and others seem to have been written by translators who’ve never used the Internet. Which is why we’ve also have had volunteers help tweak them a little. They’ll never be 100% satisfactory to everyone though, because we have to have strict control over the exact message (to prevent abuse). Ideally, we could say, “Here’s your form — go ahead and translate it and make it say anything you want.” Unfortunately, naughty people will make it say things like, “Gimme your address and you agree I can spam the heck out of your inbox forever!” and we’d never know, because we don’t understand every single language out there (and there’d be several hundred thousand signup forms to police).
So we keep the same message, and ask humans to translate.
For very custom signup forms, you can always code your own, and pass the data to MailChimp (it’s the “advanced” mode in the signup form designer). You could also use the API to make it 100% seamless.
For your newsletters, we do have an auto-translate option that runs through Google Translate. It’s pretty good for some languages (we’ve received compliments), but it’s not so great for others. So it’s totally optional. You can turn it off by un-checking the “auto-translate” option in the signup form designer.
Sorry, Ben. You’re right – the signup form seems valid also in Finnish. Will need to spend some more time to debug what our problems actually are. Maybe we’re simply fitting mailchimp into our messaging structure in the wrong way. But that’s up to us to figure out.

Hi Lor, we don’t allow users to modify those blocks because of the potential for abuse. They have to be very controlled. That’s why we’ve hired a company to translate them. In some cases, our users want to suggest better translations, so we’ve setup this form:

I’ve kind of got the same problem. I want to have my embedded form in german, however it’s just not working. No matter how often I switch the form to german in the design view (like multiple threads around the board suggest), the error messages are still in english.
Any help would be much appreciated!
For now, the only solution we have found is to disable the messages on the form itself (comment the associate js code in the embedded code given by Mailchimp) and to translate the messages (in the Mailchimp UI) which appear in a new window when a user validate the form.

Any idea when the Ajax messages are going to be translated? Also, the button in the confirmation email (“Yes, subscribe me to . . . “) is untranslated and uneditable. Surely if the rest of the form can be edited this could be as well, no?

That’s great for suscription and other forms but I want to translate my subscribers chiclet to spanish. Also, It still has some issues translating some parts in some forms

sure. The “About Your List” form does not translate automatically the title of the form and neither allows to change it manually (as it is allowed in other forms). It allows to change the rest, but I’m kinda stuck with this one ’cause I don’t know whether using it in Spanish or English (right now it’s actually mixed up).
It has the same problem on the “Profile Update Email” form here:
“If you made this request, and would like to change your preferences, use the link below
Update your preferences.”
There’s no automatically nor manually changing option. The rest of the forms work great so far.
