Roughly 3 weeks ago we launched Chimpadeedoo, a MailChimp app for iPad, and it’s already been downloaded over 1,000 times. So first off, we wanted to say thanks for all your support and feedback! We’re glad to hear that you’re enjoying the app and thinking of innovative uses for it.
Now that version 1.1 is live in the app store, I wanted to mention just a couple noteworthy things that we haven’t blogged about yet.
Once you’ve downloaded the app and connected it with your MailChimp account, it isn’t totally clear how to access the settings. Just touch the top right corner (regardless of whether your iPad is oriented horizontally or vertically) to access the control panel.
This is where you can change your theme, choose the list you’d like to add people to, edit your on-screen details and more.
Finally, one of the coolest and most useful features that we haven’t yet mentioned is that Chimpadeedoo will also store email addresses when you’re offline or don’t have an internet connection! This is great news for those of you who may be at a trade show or conference because it means one less device that you have to purchase expensive daily wi-fi for. Or imagine that you’re coaching your daughter’s soccer team and want to start an email list for all the team parents. There’s no need to worry about not having an internet connection out on the field because Chimpadeedoo will store the email addresses offline until you’re back in range of wi-fi.
Looks like maybe you might be able to justify your iPad as a business expense after all!
Coming Soon To Chimpadeedoo:
- additional themes (please let us know what you’d like to see by leaving a comment below)
- the ability to use your own photo as a background (great for corporations who want to use their logo as a way to brand the app)

Any chance we’ll get to see an app for the Andriod Market coming out any time soon? I would reeeally you long time.
I second that on the Android app!
this looks amazing. any chance you wanna give me an iPad to test it out?
I’ll second the Android app! I would love to see one.
It would be really nice if it would put the whole signup form, not just the email address. I want people to be able to provide that additional information when they sign up.
Otherwise, very nice!
We originally designed this for a POS environment, where customers really don’t want to fill in a bunch of form fields. They want to plug in their email, and move aside. But we’re getting feedback from people who want to use these in different environments (events) so we’re going to re-evaluate (as always). Thanks!
Have multiple field options so you could choose from only email to needing name, phone, address, company name etc. with your integration to some crm’s it does not do much good to only have an email with no name associated with it. Some user defineable custom product fields would be nice so they could choose one or more multiple different products so your marketing can get specific.
I’ll second the need for more fields – at least my groups. You could also make the groups field hidden and allow us to specify in the settings which group the new signups were assigned to. This would be helpful to differentiate between signups at different cities, markets, tradeshows etc.
I would also want to see additional information being gathered when they sign-up. We are very interested in this app for an August tradeshow but would have to be able to capture name, address, department/company… They would be entering a contest with the ipad. Since I am assuming it will not be done in time, I will have to start searching the web for another app – if there is one!
I second that, would be a huge benefit for us to use (and customize) multiple fields, would keep the variable alive as well when we mail. Any idea on a timeline?
Looks killer guys, keep up the good work. The offline collection is gold!
+1
this would definitely helps too
Though the specific “interest groups” functionality isn’t available yet, Chimpadeedoo v2 is now live and allows you to accomplish most of the above:
http://blog.mailchimp.com/announcing-chimpadeedoo-2/
Gotta give your customers the ability to decide which fields from the signup form need displayed.
What about a slideshow that plays in between signups? You could designate a folder of photos to play and kill two birds with one stone. We can activate the ipad’s built in slideshow but it would be easier if it was all in one.
As for themes – just a few more generic ones – we’re a farm and were definitely limited.
Thanks, Philip. We’ve also had requests for movies, in addition to slideshows. All on the to-do list for sure. Also, custom photos. So you could theoretically load up your own photo of that yummy organic arugula. Aruuuuugula. I just like saying that.
Aruuuugula.
How about the double opt-in process? Does it send the new subscribers an email so they can confirm their subscription?
Actually, there’s a little setting that you can toggle to go ahead and send someone a welcome email when they enter their address. This is nice because it sends them an email confirming their subscription details, a link to unsubscribe, and a vCard so they can add you to their address book. Here’s more info about customizing each step of the confirmation process (including the welcome email): http://eepurl.com/gOGY
Would it be possible for you to add the offline entry of contacts and addresses to the standard web app? Would be very handy, regardless of type of device used for the data entry.
Hi Michael, got your recent Paradox newsletter. Beautiful as always. Would an AIR app qualify? Because that’s what the guys are working on.
“So first off, we wanted to say thanks…” No, thank /you/!!
Another plug for an Android app.
Ditto on Android App. Maybe I’m a monkey’s uncle, but I could swear that you guys had already made one!
Like Brenda says:
It would be really nice if it would put the whole signup form, not just the email address. I want people to be able to provide that additional information when they sign up.
Love it! How long till custom backgrounds?
+1 for custom backgrounds!
Love the app – it’s definitely going to be of use to us. But can we add some fields? I really need Name & phone info too; the ability to add our own fields would make this invaluable as a tool.
Android app would be super dooper!
This might sound absurd … but why does everyone want an Android app?
It seem’s like Chimpadeedoo wouldn’t work nearly as well on a phone because in a public space, who’s going to notice a ‘phone’ signup. It only works because of the high visibility of a tablet.
And as there is no Android tablet, where would the point be?
I’ve been using this as an easy ‘show piece’ when adding people to our newsletter list.
I get a potential client business card and then just add their email address to our mailing list using chimpadeedoo (it makes quite a splash when you do it in front of them).
With the welcome email waiting for them when they get to their mailbox, it confirms their addition, and lets them know you haven’t forgotten about them. Plus, if they decide they don’t want to confirm being added to the list, I don’t have to worry later about why they aren’t opening the mail I send.
It’s easy to go back and add names etc to your database if you also get their card.
I’d love this on my iphone too for the days I don’t have the ipad with me or handy.
+1000000000000000 for custom backgrounds
Any ETA on this?
Second the request for an ETA on custom backgrounds. I could have my team colours and crest or a business could have their logo etc
Would add some great value to the app!
Yes totally agree on custom backgrounds! When when when when will this be available!?
Great app, just that’s the let down at the moment as none of the pre-done ones are amazing or really suit my field at all. (Voiceover and Media).
Are you going to be able to more fields like first name last name etc
Just supporting the other comments above. Downloaded the app this a.m. Very slick, but we won’t be able to use it until we can add 3 more fields (fname, lname, and zip). Any visibility as to when this might be available?
Would love to have at least a name field as the newsletter I send I make sure are addressed to people personally. Not so bothered about other fields but names is reeeeeeeally important. Thanks for a great app btw. Heres looking toward v.2
Agree totally on additional fields. We were going to use this at a trade show and we really need First Name, Last Name, Country and product interest fields.
In offline mode, what’s the number of email-addresses saved within the app before you need to go online?
I love the idea standing on a trade show, but will it go slower or break down after 50, 100, 1.000 or 10.000 emails?
Thank you for a great service!
I would love to see this as an Android app as we do have an android tablet and as we do trade shows it would be great to sign people up there and then but I guess there is always pen and paper
Pleeeeeeeeze!
I think that in general, the Android platform has changed a lot since we started building mobile apps. And the whole Android tablet market is still pretty new. So developing Chimpadeedoo for Android hasn’t been high on the priority list, but I’m sure we’ll be getting around to it. Meantime, can you pull up your MailChimp signup form in your Android tablet’s browser?
Are you planning exporting this to an Android phone?
