Our little Chimpadeedoo project has getting a lot of interest (as well as his brother, Chimpadeedee). When we first launched it, the most common request was for custom backgrounds. Done:
and the Mobile Lab is still chugging away at more updates, so stay tuned!
Great to be able to add our own backgrounds… Keep new features coming!
By the way… I found this funny protest this morning when I was going to work: http://pikchur.com/wRv
All best,
Will
HA! You made me click! Grrrrrr.
Just checked in with devs, and for Chimpadeedee (AIR app), updates are much easier than Chimpadeedoo (iPad app). So I’d bet on double opt-in and multiple fields happening there first. But all in all, we do plan to do all of the above with both apps.
Awesome! In fact, I really need it in the AIR App so it’s great (say hi to Eric, btw
)…
Thanks for checking this out.
(goin’ to pass this to the protestors right away)
I love the custom background option, but it doesn’t appear to work on the latest version I just downloaded.
The Background option is given, and you can pick an image from your library, but when you select “choose custom theme” from the options window, it goes to the sub-menu options, and leaves the pre-selected theme up.
Am I missing something?
When you click “choose custom theme” the very first button at the top should let you pick a photo from your Photos gallery on the iPad. On my iPad, I recall that button had a tiny preview of the most recent photo that was stored on my iPad. My guess is that depending on what that photo was, the preview icon might make the button not look very prominent. My hunch. Will ask the devs for their opinion.
I figured it out. I hadn’t selected a font color, and it doesn’t change the theme until you do. Chalk this one up to user error.
Thanks,
Phillip
Confirmed – I had to Google this to figure out what was going on. There is no default font color. Perhaps this is easily solved by setting black as a default color?
REALLY !
the most common asked for feature should have been internationalization of champaadeedee (and doo). So that the text shown can be in other languages than english. I’ve tried to tell you previously, because this “feature” is not a request, but seems more than a bug. How should you be able to use this at a presentation/show anywhere in non-english speaking countries and then it says “Enter your email adress” and “submit”……….BUG !
Thanks for the feedback, Morten. This is sort of a new project, and we’re going as fast as we can here. As I understand it, buttons are not an easy thing in iOS to customize (not as easy as you’d think, at least). So for now, they’re images. As images, they are hard to translate. But we hear you – translations.
on my ipad I’m using version 1.2 yet I am unable to select a custom background even though it allows me to browse my pictures.
I’m guessing that these changes have happened to Chimpadeedee (the Air version)?
Nope. Deedoo and deedee are run by different developers here at the office, and are on different schedules. But the changes have been programmed into deedee. We’re just making final UI tweaks and doing final testing now. Soon!
Hi, I tried making my own custom background, i made it 1024 by 1024 but no matter what i try it will not fill the screen and appears as a small image in the middle of the screen on the ipad. Photos from the library work fine but image files i have imported to the ipad all do this. Any ideas? I really wanna use this soon but need it branded.
Hi Bradley, how are you making the background images? What file format are you saving them as?
Hey there, thanks for getting back, I am using pixelmator (tried photoshop too) and saving the images as jpegs.
Hi Bradley, sorry you’re having trouble! Could you send me one of the images so I can test? I tried creating a couple images at 1024×1024 and had no problems. You can email mobile [at] mailchimp.com.
I hope the next release will include some optional fields like first and last name… Otherwise great work!
Any news on Chimpadeedoo & ‘dee collecting first names and last names just like it does in your first promo video? Also, is there a background template that I can download that has viable screen? Thanks!
I meant to type “visible screen area”.
We’re working on adding more fields. We had it in our 1st prototype, then decided customers wouldn’t like that. Then we were promptly told we were wrong.
Also, I believe Stephen’s working on a post with a PSD template.
Any information/ETA on the PSD template?
I did have the same problem with the background not filling the entire background. I used dropbox to save the photo and upload it. Than i emailed the background and save it on the ipad.
Now it works, So i think its an bug with saving it from dropbox.
Keep up the good work.
Kind regards
Rick
Hello, great app. I use it to collect emails at my bands merch table at shows. However, I’m having trouble with the background image. I can’t get it to fit exactly. What exact image size do I need to fill the screen?
Kind regards,
Yan
Hi Yan, We suggest a background size of 1024×1024. Some of that will be clipped depending on the orientation of the iPad.
This is fantastic, BUT PLEASE give us more fields!
I need the following:
First Name
Last Name
Email
Phone number
Postcode with a “find my address” button (retrieves address online)
House number
How old are your children?
This gives me all the fields I need for my Family portrait studio business, so please if you can come close that’d be great
Or just let us configure it ourselves, with a little help of course!!!!
Howdy Lionel, You’re in luck because we’re literally working on that now.
Well I’ll be…. In true Mailchimp fashion, and this is really difficult for us Brits (you know how reserved we are), yippeeeeeeeeee !!!!! BUT WHEN?
Sooner than later. I prefer to under promise and over deliver. Sorry I don’t have a specific date.
Thanks Amro, very much looking forward to using this, it will save so much time in inputting data.
I have been trying to get a custom background loaded for some time now… Every time I click a photo it does nothing and it won’t select one… Am I doing something wrong? The modal popup photo browser just stays there and doesn’t “choose” a photo.
Thanks for your help!
Nevermind. Interesting fact: it will only select the image if Location Services are turned on and the app is given the ability to collect Location Data…
Hi Matthew,
Sorry for the trouble. Image files *may* have location information in something called EXIF data and iOS so requires permission if an app wants to read images. Chimpadeedoo doesn’t read or use location data from images but it still needs this permission to read images.
